Liposuction for MenMale fat patterns, common treatment areas and what men should consider

Medically reviewed: Last reviewed by Mr Reza Nassab, FRCS Plast —

Liposuction for men usually targets the flanks (love handles), lower abdomen, chest, chin and neck, and sometimes the back. Men tend to store fat centrally and have firmer, more fibrous fat, so technique and planning differ slightly from women. Liposuction aims to create a leaner, more defined outline, but it cannot remove fat stored deep around the organs or replace a healthy weight.

How men store fat

Under the influence of testosterone, men generally store fat around the waist, flanks and upper abdomen rather than the hips and thighs. There are two layers to consider. Subcutaneous fat lies beneath the skin and can be pinched; this is the fat liposuction removes. Visceral fat lies inside the abdomen around the organs and makes the tummy firm and rounded; it cannot be removed with liposuction and is reduced only through weight loss, diet and exercise. Men with a firm, protruding abdomen often have more visceral fat, which limits what surgery can achieve.

Common areas treated in men

  • Flanks: love handles are the most requested area; contouring them sharpens the waist from behind and the side.
  • Abdomen: subcutaneous fat over the lower and upper tummy; sometimes combined with flanks as 360 liposuction.
  • Chest: fatty chest fullness; where firm glandular tissue is present, this is gynaecomastia and may need excision as well as liposuction.
  • Chin and neck: a fuller neck can be refined with double chin liposuction.
  • Back: rolls around the bra-strap level or lower back, which can show under fitted shirts.

Male-specific considerations

Male fat is typically denser and more fibrous, particularly on the flanks, back and chest, so it can take more effort to remove evenly. Vaser liposuction, which uses ultrasound to loosen fat before removal, is often useful in these areas. Male skin is usually thicker, which helps disguise minor irregularities but may retract more slowly. The aim is a natural masculine shape, with a straighter waist rather than a curved, feminine contour. Some men ask about high-definition sculpting to accentuate muscle; this carries a higher risk of an artificial look and is approached conservatively.

Health and suitability

Good candidates are men at or close to a stable weight, in good health, who exercise and eat sensibly but still have stubborn areas of fat. Mr Nassab will ask about alcohol intake, smoking, medications and any use of anabolic steroids or other supplements, which can affect chest tissue and surgical risk. Recent weight loss, including with weight-loss medication, should be stable for several months first. Conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes need to be well controlled.

Recovery for men

  • First week: soreness, swelling and bruising, managed with simple pain relief and a compression vest or garment.
  • Work: office work often resumes after one to two weeks; heavy manual jobs may need longer.
  • Gym and sport: walking from day one, light cardio after two to three weeks, and weights and contact sports usually after around six weeks.
  • Garment: worn for around six weeks; a vest style is used after chest treatment.
  • Results: the outline improves as swelling settles over three to six months.

Seek same-day help from your GP or NHS 111 for sudden calf pain or leg swelling, and call 999 for chest pain or breathlessness.

Maintaining your result

The fat cells removed do not return, but remaining fat cells can still enlarge. Men who gain weight after liposuction often notice it more in untreated areas and in visceral fat inside the abdomen. Keeping a steady weight through regular training and a balanced diet helps preserve the new contour. Our article on whether fat can come back after liposuction explains this in more detail.

Cost

Liposuction costs from £7,500 for one area, £8,500 for two and £9,500 for three areas. Vaser liposuction is from £8,000 for one area and £9,000 for two. Chest reduction for gynaecomastia costs from £9,500. The £150 consultation fee is separate. Cosmetic surgery is for adults aged 18 and over.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can liposuction give me a six-pack?

Liposuction can reduce fat over the abdominal muscles and improve definition, but visible muscle depends on your own muscle development and low overall body fat. Etching techniques are approached cautiously.

Is male chest fat the same as gynaecomastia?

Not always. Some men have fatty fullness only, while gynaecomastia involves firm glandular tissue that may need to be removed surgically.

Why is my stomach hard rather than soft?

A firm, rounded abdomen usually reflects fat inside the abdomen around the organs, which liposuction cannot remove.

How soon can men get back to the gym?

Light cardio is usually possible after two to three weeks and weight training after around six weeks, depending on your recovery.
