Treatment Overview

An abdominoplasty is commonly known as a tummy tuck. This procedure is performed to improve the shape of the abdomen, or tummy, by removing excess skin and fat. This procedure is helpful following weight loss or after having children. There are a number of reasons why patients may need a tummy tuck. The most common reasons for this is following pregnancy or weight loss. During pregnancy, the growing baby causes stretching of the skin and muscles of the abdomen. Once the baby is born, some redundant skin and muscle wall weakness may persist. The procedure can help tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall and remove that redundant skin. Patients that have lost a significant amount of weight may also experience some redundant skin. This can be combined with a breast procedure and is called a Mummy Makeover. What are the different types of tummy tucks?

There are a few different techniques available for tummy tucks in Manchester & Cheshire depending on your needs and suitability. Mr Nassab will discuss these options and highlight which ones would be most suitable for you in your consultation.

Liposuction alone is a useful way of addressing localized areas of fat where there is not much redundant skin. Liposuction can also be combined with an abdominoplasty procedure. The main advantage of the combined procedure is that liposuction can help reduce fat from the flanks and thighs whilst the abdominoplasty addresses the excess skin and weak muscles of the abdomen.

The mini-abdominoplasty is a technique that is useful in patients where there is only a slight excess of skin and fat in the lower abdomen. This is commonly performed in patients following pregnancy. This operation results in a scar across the waistline but avoids scarring around the belly button or umbilicus.

At Reza Nassab Plastic Surgery in Cheshire & Manchester tummy tucks involve the removal of a larger amount of skin and fat from the lower abdomen resulting in a longer scar across the waistline. Plicating the rectus, or six-pack, muscles can strengthen any muscle wall weakness. The skin of the upper abdomen is pulled down resulting in tightening of the abdominal skin. The umbilicus is also repositioned during this procedure resulting in scars around the belly button.

Fleur De Lis Abdominoplasty

The Fleur de Lis abdominoplasty is similar to a traditional technique but also has a vertical scar in the midline. This is used when there is more redundant skin in the midline that needs to be removed.

Extended Abdominoplasty

The extended or circumferential abdominoplasty is usually used when there has been massive weight loss. This technique involves extending the scars around to the back and even fully around the waist to remove skin and fat from the abdomen and back.

How is a tummy tuck performed?

The various types of abdominoplasty are all performed under a general anaesthetic as an inpatient. The length of the operation will depend on the technique used and Mr Nassab will discuss this with you. Generally, you will be in hospital for 1 night following the operation.

What are the risks of tummy tuck?

Scar; Seroma; Numbness or Change in Sensation; Asymmetry; Dog ears; Bleeding or Haematoma; Infection; Wound breakdown; Fat necrosis, irregularities, unevenness; Changes with time and weight gain; Residual redundant skin or muscle weakness. There are certain factors that may increase risks with the procedure.

What are the alternatives to tummy tuck?

There are some less invasive procedures that may be suitable for some patients. These include radiofrequency skin tightening procedures such as Morpheus8 and BodyTite. There are other body contouring devices such as Emsculpt Neo.

Can I fly after lipoabdominoplasty?

We would recommend waiting for 6 weeks before flying long haul. This is to ensure that everything has settled and there are likely to be no problems prior to flying.

When can I exercise after my tummy tuck?

The normal recommendation is 6 weeks for strenuous physical activity. Exercising earlier may cause increases in blood pressure and heart rate that may increase the risk of bleeding. We would recommend not doing much abdominal workouts such as sit ups until a few months have passed.

Where are the scars placed for a tummy tuck?

The scars for a full tummy tuck procedure run below the waistline from hip to hip and also around the belly button. A mini tummy tuck does not have a scar around the belly button.
