Earlobe Repair

Treatment overview

Earlobes may split or stretch with time after use of ear rings. This can result in either a split earlobe or widened piercing hole. Recently there has also been a trend for various piercings that stretch the earlobes significantly. Once these piercings are removed there is excessive stretched skin of the earlobe and a large hole. The procedure can be performed to rectify these problems. Earlobes that have been stretched significantly are likely to have loose redundant skin that will need to be reconstructed. Specialist techniques such as using rotation flaps may needed for repair. This may help aid a more rapid recovery and ability to wear earrings earlier. Earlobe Repair Frequently Asked Questions

How is the repair performed?

This is normally performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthetic. This means that you will attend a hospital appointment for the procedure and can leave soon after it is performed. The local anaesthetic is an injection to help numb the earlobe to allow the procedure to be performed.

How long does it take to heal?

In Cheshire & Manchester earlobe repair will involve stitching of the split or stretched lobe. The stitches will normally stay in for a week and then you will have them removed. Once the sutures are removed the wound should be fully healed. It will look a little red and this will gradually fade with time. This may take a few months to a year to fully settle.

When can I have the ear pierced after an earlobe repair?

Generally it is recommended that you should wait about 2-3 months before having a repeat piercing. If you have a rotational flap repair then this may allow a piercing to be made sooner. It is important to understand that the earlobe may stretch or split again with prolonged use of heavy earrings.

How much does an earlobe repair cost?

The cost of the procedure will depend on whether it is one side or both. The price for one sided split starts from £850 depending on where the procedure is performed. The price for both sides starts from £1250. The cost of stretched repair starts from £950 for one side and £1500 for two.

Where can I have earlobe repair?

Earlobe repair in Manchester & Cheshire is performed at our clinics called CLNQ.

Am I a good candidate for earlobe repair?

Most adults with a split, torn, or stretched earlobe are suitable candidates. Ideal patients are in good general health, non-smokers or willing to stop smoking around the procedure, and have realistic expectations. A consultation with Mr Nassab will confirm your suitability based on the degree of damage, tissue quality, and your aesthetic goals.

Will I have a scar after earlobe repair?

A fine scar is expected along the repaired edge but is typically discreet and fades significantly over time. Meticulous suturing minimises scarring, and you will receive detailed scar care advice to help the scar mature as smoothly as possible. Most patients find their scars barely noticeable once fully healed.

What is the difference between split and stretched earlobe repair?

A split earlobe repair corrects a tear caused by heavy earrings, trauma, or a caught earring. A stretched earlobe repair addresses significant widening of the piercing hole — often from gauging plugs — which leaves excess skin and a large opening. Stretched repairs are more complex and may require rotation flap techniques to reconstruct the lobe shape fully.

Is earlobe repair painful?

The procedure itself is performed under local anaesthetic, so you should feel no pain during surgery — only mild pressure. Afterwards, some tenderness and swelling are normal for a few days and are easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Most patients find the recovery very comfortable compared with other surgical procedures.

Can earlobe repair be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Earlobe repair is frequently combined with earlobe reduction for patients who want a smaller lobe at the same time. It can also be performed alongside otoplasty (ear pinning) or other minor facial procedures depending on your individual requirements, which Mr Nassab will discuss at your consultation.
