The mummy makeover has become a term used for the combination of breast enlargement or uplift and tummy tuck after having children. It has been widely adopted in the States but less so in the U.K.
Breast changes after having children
The common breast changes after childbirth include loss of volume, drooping and lower nipple position. There are a few options for addressing the changes of the breast from breast enlargement to a breast uplift. Breast enlargement is used to increase the volume or size of the breast by using a breast implant. This may help lift the nipple slightly depending on your breast shape and amount of drooping that you have. When there is significant drooping of the breast and the nipple and areolar have dropped then an uplift is likely to be needed. It may also be possible to perform an augmentation mastopexy which combines the uplift and breast enlargement. The uplift procedure involves more scarring with scars around the nipple, down the middle of the breast and possibly in the fold of the breast underneath.
Abdominal or Tummy changes after having children
Pregnancy results in a number of changes for the tummy or abdomen. Firstly the growing baby inside stretches the tummy muscles and skin. This results in stretch marks which one of the signs of the post pregnancy tummy. Weakening of the abdominal muscles can give a bulge in the middle of the tummy. Once the baby is born the tummy gradually returns to normal but the overstretched skin may not shrink completely. This results in loose skin which may produce a little overhang at the waist. There will also be stretch marks on the tummy and the amount of these will vary greatly from patient to patient. A tummy tuck procedure can help address the issues of weakened tummy muscles and loose skin. In some women there may not be much loose skin to allow a full tummy tuck and they may be more suited to a mini-abdominoplasty or mini tummy tuck.
The Mummy Makeover
The most common Mummy Makeover request is breast augmentation and tummy tuck. This combined operation is performed under a general anaesthetic and will last between 2-3 hours. Patients having breast enlargement and mini tummy tuck may be done as a day case meaning that you will be able to go home the same day. If you need full tummy tuck then you are likely to need an overnight stay in hospital.
