Non-surgical breast lift treatments can make a small difference in some people, but none can reliably lift a breast that has noticeably dropped. Tapes and bras change shape only while you wear them, chest exercises strengthen the muscle behind the breast, and energy-based devices may give modest skin tightening at best. For moderate or significant sagging, a surgical breast lift (mastopexy) is the only treatment that repositions the nipple and reshapes the breast.
Why do breasts sag?
Breast sagging (ptosis) happens as the skin and internal supporting ligaments stretch and breast tissue changes. Common causes include pregnancy and breastfeeding, weight loss, ageing and the menopause, genetics, larger breast size and smoking. It is a normal change and is not harmful. Because it is caused by stretching of skin and internal support, rather than by weak muscles, treatments that work only on the surface or on the muscle have limited effect. Surgeons grade sagging by where the nipple sits in relation to the crease under the breast, which helps decide what treatment may help.
Breast tape and bras
- Breast tape: adhesive tape can lift and shape breasts under clothing, but the effect lasts only while it is worn. It can irritate the skin, so patch testing and careful removal are sensible.
- Supportive and push-up bras: a professionally fitted bra is the simplest way to improve shape. It does not prevent or reverse sagging long term, but it improves comfort and appearance day to day.
Exercises
Chest exercises strengthen the pectoral muscles, which lie behind the breast. This can improve posture and give a slightly firmer base, but the breast itself contains no muscle, so exercise cannot tighten stretched skin or ligaments or raise the nipple.
Energy-based devices
Radiofrequency, ultrasound and similar skin-tightening treatments heat the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate collagen. They may produce a modest improvement in skin texture and very mild laxity, usually over several sessions, and results vary between individuals. They are not able to lift heavy or significantly sagging breasts.
Threads and fillers
Thread lifts place dissolvable threads under the skin to lift tissue. In the breast, any lift is usually small and short-lived, and there are risks of visible threads, dimpling, infection and discomfort. Mr Nassab does not offer thread lifts. Injectable fillers are not recommended for breast enlargement or lift in the UK because of concerns about lumps, infection and interference with breast imaging.
Surgical breast lift (mastopexy)
A breast lift removes excess skin, reshapes the breast tissue and raises the nipple and areola to a higher position. The areola can also be reduced. Depending on the degree of sagging, the scars go around the areola, around the areola and vertically down (lollipop), or also along the breast crease (anchor). Where there has been loss of volume, an implant can be placed at the same time (augmentation mastopexy), or fat transfer can be considered. Breast surgery is for adults aged 18 and over, and it is often best to wait until you have finished having children, as pregnancy can change the result. Mr Nassab will examine your breasts, discuss your goals and explain which scar pattern and approach would be most appropriate for you, as well as what a lift can and cannot achieve.
Recovery, risks and cost
Most people return to desk-based work after about one to two weeks and avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for around six weeks, wearing a supportive bra as advised. Swelling settles over a few months and scars fade over a year or more, but they are permanent. Risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry, wound healing problems and possible effects on breastfeeding. The breasts will continue to age after surgery. A breast lift (mastopexy) with Mr Nassab is from £11,500 and augmentation mastopexy from £12,500. The consultation fee of £150 is separate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you lift your breasts without surgery?
Temporarily, with tape or a supportive bra. Non-surgical treatments cannot reliably reposition a breast that has dropped.
Does radiofrequency lift breasts?
It may give a modest improvement in skin quality and very mild laxity, but it cannot lift significant sagging.
Do chest exercises stop sagging?
They strengthen the muscle behind the breast and can improve posture, but they cannot tighten breast skin or ligaments.
When is a surgical breast lift the better option?
When the nipple sits at or below the breast crease or the breast has lost shape, surgery is usually the only effective treatment.
