High-definition liposuction is a form of body contouring that removes fat selectively around the natural borders of the muscles, rather than evenly across an area, so that the underlying anatomy shows more clearly. It is usually performed with Vaser ultrasound technology and is best suited to fit, lean adults at a stable weight with good skin tone who have a thin layer of stubborn fat hiding muscle they have already developed.
How it differs from standard liposuction
Conventional liposuction aims for a smooth, even reduction in fat, producing a slimmer outline. High-definition work goes further by varying the depth of fat removal. Fat is thinned more over the grooves between muscles, such as the midline of the abdomen, the sides of the six-pack, the V-line and the edge of the chest, while a layer is deliberately preserved over the muscle bellies. The aim is to mimic the light and shadow seen on a naturally lean, athletic body. Some surgeons describe different levels of definition, from a subtle athletic look to more pronounced etching, and the choice is a matter of detailed discussion.
The role of Vaser
The ultrasound energy used in Vaser liposuction emulsifies fat before it is removed, which allows finer, more controlled work in the superficial layer just beneath the skin. This is important for creating graduated transitions rather than sharp lines. Some surgeons believe the energy may also encourage modest skin retraction, though the effect varies between individuals. The skill lies in the planning, the markings and judgement of how much fat to leave behind.
Areas commonly treated
- Abdomen: the linea alba (midline), the linea semilunaris (outer edges of the six-pack) and the tendinous intersections.
- Flanks and lower abdomen: to bring out the iliac furrow, also known as the Adonis belt.
- Chest: in men, to define the lower and outer border of the pectoral muscle; often considered alongside gynaecomastia surgery where there is glandular tissue.
- Arms and shoulders: to accentuate the deltoid, biceps and triceps outlines.
- Back: to refine the waist and highlight the lower back contour.
Women may seek a softer version, such as a gentle midline groove and a defined waist, rather than a pronounced six-pack.
Who is a good candidate?
The best results tend to occur in people who are already close to their ideal weight, exercise regularly, have well-developed muscles and have firm skin. A pinch of fat that stays despite training is the typical scenario. It is less suitable if you have a larger volume of fat, loose skin after weight loss or pregnancy, or a separation of the abdominal muscles, when a tummy tuck may be more appropriate. Weight stability matters a great deal: gaining weight afterwards can distort etched lines, while losing a lot can make them look exaggerated. Cosmetic surgery is only for adults aged 18 and over.
Recovery
Recovery is similar to other Vaser procedures, but garments and foam pads are especially important because they help the skin settle into the new grooves. A garment is typically worn for around six weeks. Swelling can temporarily blur the definition, and the contours usually become clearer from around three months, refining over the following year. Lymphatic massage may be suggested to help swelling. The Vaser recovery guide covers the timeline in more detail.
Risks and limitations
In addition to the general risks of liposuction, such as bruising, seroma, infection, numbness and blood clots, high-definition work carries particular concerns. Lines placed in the wrong position, or etched too deeply, can look artificial and are difficult to correct. Over-resection can leave irregularities, and definition that looked natural at one weight may not suit you if your body changes. For these reasons Mr Nassab tends to favour natural, proportionate definition that reflects your own anatomy. The risks page explains each complication.
Cost and next steps
High-definition liposuction builds on Vaser, which starts from £8,000 for one area, £9,000 for two and £10,000 for three; more detailed plans beyond three areas are quoted at consultation. The £150 consultation is charged separately. See the Vaser cost guide for what the price includes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can high-definition liposuction give me a six-pack without exercise?
It cannot create muscle. The technique reveals muscle that is already there, so regular training is an important part of achieving and keeping a natural-looking result.
Is the result permanent?
Removed fat cells do not return, but remaining fat responds to weight change, so the look can soften or distort if your weight changes significantly.
Is high-definition liposuction only for men?
No. Women also have it, often choosing softer definition such as a subtle midline and a slimmer waist.
How long does the surgery take?
It usually takes longer than standard liposuction because of the detailed marking and graduated fat removal, often between two and four hours depending on the areas.
Can it be combined with other procedures?
Sometimes, for example with gynaecomastia surgery in men. Combined plans are assessed individually for safety.
