On the day
Earlobe repair is normally performed under local anaesthetic, so you are awake but should feel no pain during the procedure, only a sensation of pressure. It typically takes around thirty minutes to an hour, depending on whether one or both ears are treated. Afterwards a small dressing or protective tape is applied. You can go home straight away and can usually drive yourself, although some people prefer to have company. When the anaesthetic wears off a few hours later, the lobe may ache or throb; simple painkillers such as paracetamol usually help.
The first 48 hours
Keep the dressing clean and dry for the first day or two. Mild swelling and a little bruising are common and settle within days. Sleep on your back or on the opposite side if only one ear was repaired, and avoid pressing the lobe against the pillow. Be careful when pulling clothes over your head and when using a phone, and avoid headsets or earphones that press on the ear.
The first two weeks
- Washing: you can usually shower after 48 hours, keeping the stitches as dry as possible and patting them gently afterwards.
- Hair care: avoid hair dye, sprays and heavy styling products near the ear until the wound has healed.
- Stitches: non-dissolving stitches are usually removed at around seven to ten days; dissolving stitches fall out on their own.
- Work and daily life: most people carry on with normal activities almost immediately.
- Exercise: light exercise is fine after a few days; avoid contact sports or anything that could knock the ear for around two weeks.
- Swimming: wait until the wound has fully healed, usually around two weeks.
Weeks three to twelve
Once the stitches are out, the scar may look pink and slightly raised. This is normal. When the skin has closed completely, gentle massage and silicone gel can help it soften and flatten. Protect the scar from strong sunlight with high-factor sun cream, especially in summer. Clip-on earrings should be avoided during this period, as their pressure can affect healing.
Three to eighteen months
Earlobe scars usually mature well because the skin of the lobe heals favourably. The line gradually fades from pink to a pale colour close to your natural skin tone, typically over twelve to eighteen months. If a small notch appears at the lower edge of the lobe as the scar contracts, it often improves with time; if it persists, a minor revision can be discussed. Most people find the repair hard to spot once it has settled.
When can earrings be worn again?
The earlobe needs to be fully healed and strong before a new piercing is made.
