How surgical excision works
Tattoo excision removes the tattooed skin entirely. The area is numbed, the tattoo is cut out, usually as an ellipse so the wound can close neatly, and the edges are brought together with layered stitches. Because the inked skin is removed, the ink goes with it in a single procedure, and the trade-off is a scar. Mr Nassab explains the process on the tattoo removal page.

- Local anaesthetic: the procedure is performed awake at CLNQ.

Staged excision for larger tattoos
The size of tattoo that can be removed in one procedure depends on how much the surrounding skin can stretch, which varies with body area and skin laxity. When a tattoo is too wide to close in one go, it can be removed in stages, taking out the central part first and the remainder several months later once the skin has relaxed. Each stage is a separate procedure and is quoted at consultation. Very large tattoos may not be suitable for excision, and Mr Nassab will say so honestly.
The scar you should expect
Excision exchanges a tattoo for a scar, usually a straight line somewhat longer than the tattoo is wide. It is pink at first and typically fades and flattens over twelve to eighteen months, helped by silicone gel and sun protection. Scars on the back, chest and shoulders tend to stretch more than those on the face or inner arm, and some people form raised scars. Deciding whether a scar will bother you less than the tattoo is an important part of the consultation. Mr Nassab will mark out the likely length and direction of the scar so you can picture it before deciding, and will explain where it is likely to sit in relation to natural skin creases.
Surgical excision and laser
Laser tattoo removal is a different treatment that breaks down ink over multiple sessions. Mr Nassab does not offer laser treatment. Surgical excision may suit you if the tattoo is small to moderate in size, you would prefer the ink removed in one procedure where possible, or you accept a linear scar in exchange. Some people have had laser elsewhere and still have faded ink remaining; residual ink can often be excised in the same way, and Mr Nassab will assess the skin to see whether earlier treatment has affected its quality or elasticity.

Recovery
