Medically reviewed: Last reviewed by Mr Reza Nassab, FRCS Plast —

Mr Reza Nassab performs adult otoplasty (ear pinning) in Manchester. Consultations are held at CLNQ in Deansgate Square, and because surgery is usually under local anaesthetic, it may be carried out at CLNQ, Deansgate Square, rather than at Deansgate Hospital, so you can go home the same day. Otoplasty under local anaesthetic is from £5,000 and the £150 consultation is charged separately.

About otoplasty

Prominent ears usually result from one or both of two features: an under-developed fold in the upper ear (the antihelix) and a deep bowl of cartilage (the concha) that pushes the ear away from the head. Otoplasty reshapes the cartilage through an incision in the crease behind the ear, using stitches and gentle shaping to create a natural fold and set the ear closer to the head. Earlobe prominence can be addressed at the same time. The goal is ears that look balanced and unremarkable, rather than flattened against the skull.

Why adults choose ear pinning

Many adults have felt self-conscious about their ears since childhood and have worn their hair to hide them. Some were teased at school; others simply find that prominent ears limit hairstyles or make them avoid photographs. Adult ear cartilage is firmer than a child’s, so the technique is adapted accordingly, but the operation is generally well tolerated under local anaesthetic. Mr Nassab provides otoplasty for adults aged 18 and over.

The consultation at CLNQ, Deansgate Square

Your consultation takes place at CLNQ, Deansgate Square, Manchester, and appointments are also available at CLNQ in Knutsford. Mr Nassab will examine each ear separately, noting the fold, the depth of the bowl, the earlobe and any asymmetry, and ask what bothers you most. He will show you where the scar will lie behind the ear, explain what can and cannot be changed, and go through the recovery and risks. Photographs are taken for planning. You will leave with written information and a quote, and there is no pressure to decide on the day.

Surgery day

Under local anaesthetic, otoplasty may be carried out at CLNQ, Deansgate Square; if a general anaesthetic is needed, surgery takes place at Deansgate Hospital in Manchester city centre. After admission and a final check of the plan, the ears are numbed with local anaesthetic; you stay awake but should feel only pressure and movement. The procedure commonly takes around one to two hours for both ears. A padded head bandage is applied and, after a short rest, most patients go home the same day. Please arrange for someone to take you home, as you should not drive with the bandage on.

Follow-up in Manchester

Your first review, usually about a week after surgery, is when the bandage comes off and the wounds are checked. From then on you will wear a soft headband, mainly at night, for around six weeks. Further reviews are arranged in Manchester to monitor the shape and scar as swelling settles over the following months. You will have a contact number for the team at all times; increasing one-sided ear pain in the first few days should be reported urgently.

Travelling from Greater Manchester and the North West

Patients come from Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Bolton, Oldham, Bury and beyond, as well as from Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Yorkshire. Because the bandage stays on for about a week and you will not be driving during that time, it is worth planning transport to and from Manchester for the operation and the first review. Many patients take a week off work, and those who travel further sometimes arrange for a friend or relative to accompany them.

Results and next steps

Once the bandage is removed you will see the new position of your ears, which may look slightly over-corrected at first while swelling settles. Tenderness and numbness fade over weeks, and the scar behind the ear matures over 12 to 18 months. Read the otoplasty cost guide for details of what the price includes. Finance may be available through Chrysalis Finance; Reza Nassab Ltd is a credit broker, not a lender. To arrange a consultation in Manchester, please contact the team.
