Belly Button Surgery RecoveryWhat to expect in the days, weeks and months after an umbilical lift or umbilicoplasty

Medically reviewed: Last reviewed by Mr Reza Nassab, FRCS Plast —

Recovery from an umbilical lift or umbilicoplasty is usually straightforward: most people go home the same day, return to desk-based work within a few days and avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for around four weeks. The navel can look swollen and slightly irregular at first, and the shape and scar continue to refine for up to a year.

Why recovery is relatively quick

Belly button surgery is a small, focused procedure. It is often carried out under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation, and typically takes under an hour. The incisions are placed within or around the navel so that the scar is hidden in its natural folds. Because the operation does not involve large areas of tissue, pain is usually mild and settles within days. Recovery can take longer if an umbilical hernia is repaired at the same time, and Mr Nassab will tailor the advice if that is part of your plan.

The first 48 hours

You will leave with a small dressing, and sometimes light packing inside the navel to support its new shape. Mild soreness, a feeling of tightness and some bruising around the belly button are normal. Simple pain relief such as paracetamol is usually sufficient; follow the advice you are given about anti-inflammatory medicines. Rest at home, move around gently and avoid bending or straining. Keep the dressing clean and dry until you are told you can shower.

Week one

  • Showering: usually possible after about 48 hours, keeping water pressure gentle over the navel and patting dry afterwards.
  • Dressings: change or remove them as instructed. Some patients are asked to keep a small dressing or foam in the navel for the first week.
  • Stitches: many are dissolvable; any that need removing are usually taken out at around one to two weeks.
  • Work: desk-based work is often possible within two to five days, provided you avoid lifting.
  • Driving: once you can wear a seatbelt comfortably, turn without discomfort and brake firmly.

Weeks two to six

The navel gradually looks more natural as swelling reduces. Continue to avoid heavy lifting, sit-ups, core exercises and high-impact training for about four weeks, or longer if a hernia was repaired, as these increase pressure on the healing tissues. Walking is encouraged throughout. Avoid swimming, baths and hot tubs until the wound has fully healed. If you are given a supportive garment or binder, wear it as advised. At your follow-up, the team will check healing and confirm when you can return to full activity.

Months three to twelve

The inside of the belly button may appear pink or slightly raised for several months. Over time the scar softens and fades, and the shape settles as residual swelling resolves. Scars typically mature over 12 to 18 months. It is best to judge the final appearance after this period rather than in the early weeks, when a little puffiness or asymmetry is common. A stable weight helps maintain the result, and a future pregnancy may alter the navel again.

Scar care

Once the wound has fully closed, a silicone gel applied gently to the scar can help it flatten and fade. Keep the area clean, avoid picking at any crusts and protect the abdomen from strong sun, particularly during the first year, as sun exposure can darken healing scars. Avoid smoking and vaping, which reduce blood flow and slow healing.

Warning signs

Contact the team the same day if you develop a fever, increasing redness spreading from the navel, worsening pain, or discharge that is cloudy or smells unpleasant. Contact the team urgently if the area becomes rapidly swollen and tense. Sudden swelling or pain in one calf needs a same-day GP appointment or a call to NHS 111, and chest pain or breathlessness needs a 999 call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is belly button surgery painful?

Most people describe mild soreness and tightness for a few days, managed with simple pain relief. Discomfort is usually greater if a hernia repair is combined with the procedure.

When is it safe to return to the gym?

Gentle walking is encouraged straight away. Core work, heavy lifting and high-impact exercise are usually avoided for about four weeks, or longer after a hernia repair.

Will the navel look strange at first?

It is common for the belly button to look swollen, slightly irregular or asymmetric in the early weeks. The shape settles over several months.

How long before the scar fades?

The scar inside the navel usually softens and fades over 12 to 18 months. Silicone gel and sun protection can help once the wound has healed.
