Most people feel ready to be seen in public around two weeks after a neck lift, return to desk-based work at about two weeks, and resume full exercise at around six weeks. Swelling and tightness under the chin settle gradually over several months, and scars continue to mature for up to 12 to 18 months. Every recovery is individual, and Mr Nassab will give you personal instructions.
The first 48 hours
You will wake with a supportive dressing or chin-and-neck garment in place. Some patients have a small drain for the first night to remove fluid, which is usually taken out before you go home or at your first check. The neck will feel tight and swollen, and it is common for the skin under the chin and around the ears to feel numb. Pain is usually moderate and controlled with the prescribed painkillers. Rest with your head raised on two or three pillows, keep your neck in a neutral position and avoid bending forward or turning sharply. Have someone with you for at least the first night.
Week one
Bruising often spreads down towards the collarbones as it settles, which can look alarming but is normal. Wear the compression garment as instructed, which is typically most of the day and night during this period. Stitches or clips are usually removed at around one week at a nurse clinic. You can usually shower after the first dressing check, patting the incisions dry. Soft foods can make eating more comfortable while the neck feels tight. Short, gentle walks around the house help circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots.
Weeks two to six
- Appearance: most visible bruising fades by the end of week two; residual swelling can make the neck feel firm or lumpy, which usually softens over the following weeks.
- Work: many people return to desk-based work at around two weeks; physically demanding jobs may need longer.
- Driving: drive only when you can turn your head fully and perform an emergency stop without discomfort, typically after one to two weeks, and check your insurer’s guidance.
- Garment: you may move to night-time wear only after the first week or two, depending on your progress.
- Exercise: walking is encouraged throughout; light exercise can often restart at around three to four weeks, with strenuous training, heavy lifting and contact sports from about six weeks.
Months three to twelve
By three months most people feel their neck looks natural in everyday life, although subtle swelling, particularly under the chin, may persist. Numbness around the ears and under the jaw usually improves gradually as the nerves recover, and some altered sensation can take many months to settle. The final contour of the jaw and neck is usually judged at around six to twelve months. Your follow-up appointments track progress and allow any concerns to be addressed early.
Sleep, hair and daily life
Sleep on your back with your head elevated for around two weeks to reduce swelling and protect the incisions. Avoid tight collars and pulling clothes over your head at first; button or zip-front tops are easier. Hair can usually be washed gently after the first dressing check, but avoid hair dye, hot hairdryers on the incisions and heavy earrings for several weeks. Stop smoking and nicotine products well before surgery and throughout recovery, as they reduce blood flow to the skin and slow healing.
Caring for your scars
Neck lift incisions typically sit under the chin and around or behind the ears, often extending into the hairline. They are pink and slightly raised at first and fade over 12 to 18 months. Once healed, gentle massage and silicone gel or sheets can help. Protect the scars from the sun with high-factor sunscreen or hair styling. Our neck lift risks guide explains what to do if a scar thickens.
Warning signs and who to contact
Rapid, one-sided swelling of the neck or face, increasing pain or tightness in the first day or two may indicate a haematoma (a collection of blood) and needs urgent contact with the surgical team. If swelling affects your breathing or swallowing, call 999. Fever, spreading redness or discharge from a wound should be reported to the team the same day. Sudden calf pain or one-sided leg swelling needs same-day assessment by your GP or NHS 111, and chest pain or breathlessness requires a 999 call.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will my neck feel tight?
Tightness is most noticeable in the first few weeks and usually eases steadily over two to three months as swelling settles.
When is it usual to go out in public after a neck lift?
Many people feel comfortable socially at around two weeks, when most visible bruising has faded. Scarves and high collars can help earlier.
Is a neck lift painful?
Discomfort is usually described as tightness and aching rather than sharp pain, and it is typically well controlled with prescribed pain relief.
When can make-up be worn over the scars?
Once the incisions have fully healed and the stitches are out, usually after about two weeks, you can use make-up over them unless advised otherwise.
How much time off work is needed?
Plan for around two weeks away from desk-based work, and longer if your job is physical.
