Recovery after MiniAug is typically quicker and gentler than after a traditional breast augmentation under general anaesthetic. Most patients walk out of the clinic within a few hours, resume light daily activities within a day or two and return to desk-based work within a few days, while the breasts continue to settle over the following months.
Why MiniAug recovery is different
MiniAug is an awake breast augmentation: the implant, usually a Motiva Preserve, is placed through a small incision under local anaesthetic, using a technique designed to minimise disruption to surrounding tissue. Avoiding a general anaesthetic means no recovery from grogginess or nausea, and the tissue-sparing approach typically means less swelling and discomfort. That said, it is still surgery, and your body needs time to heal. Following your aftercare plan closely helps protect the result. You can read more about the implant on our Motiva Preserve page.
The first 48 hours
You will usually be able to stand, walk and get dressed shortly after the procedure, and most people go home the same day with a companion. The breasts may feel tight, bruised or sore, and a burning or pressure sensation is common as the local anaesthetic wears off. Regular simple painkillers usually keep things comfortable. Wear the supportive surgical bra day and night, rest with your upper body slightly raised and avoid lifting anything heavier than a kettle. Keep the dressing clean and dry, following the instructions you are given about showering.
Week one
- Daily life: light activities such as walking, cooking and working at a computer are usually fine within a day or two.
- Work: many people with office jobs return within a few days; physical roles need longer.
- Arms: avoid reaching overhead repeatedly, pushing, pulling or lifting young children.
- Sleep: sleep on your back, slightly propped up, for the first few weeks.
- Wound review: a check-up in the first week or two allows the team to look at the incision and your comfort.
Weeks two to six
Swelling and firmness ease progressively, and the implants begin to soften and settle into position. You can usually return to gentle cardiovascular exercise such as brisk walking or a stationary bike after around two weeks, then build up gradually. Upper-body weights, running with high impact, swimming and contact sports are typically avoided until around six weeks, depending on your review. Keep wearing the supportive bra as advised; underwired bras are generally introduced later. Driving is possible once you can wear a seatbelt comfortably, turn the wheel freely and perform an emergency stop, which for many people is within the first week.
Three to twelve months: settling and scar care
The breasts continue to soften and the shape matures over roughly three to six months. The scar is short and placed discreetly, and it typically starts pink and firm before fading and flattening over 12 to 18 months. Once the wound has fully healed, gentle massage with a silicone gel or sheet can help, and protecting the scar from the sun for the first year reduces the chance of darkening. Long-term implant checks are part of good care, and you should report any change in breast shape or feel.
Warning signs and urgency
Contact the surgical team urgently if one breast becomes rapidly swollen, tense or much more painful than the other, as this may indicate bleeding. Fever, discharge from the wound or spreading redness should be reported to the team the same day. Sudden one-sided leg swelling or calf pain needs same-day assessment by your GP or NHS 111, and chest pain or breathlessness requires a 999 call. If you are unsure whether a symptom is normal, it is always better to call.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long after MiniAug do people go back to work?
Many people with desk-based jobs return within a few days. Roles that involve lifting or physical effort usually need a couple of weeks or more.
Are drains needed after MiniAug?
Drains are not typically needed with this minimally invasive technique. Mr Nassab will confirm the plan for your procedure at consultation.
When is side sleeping possible again?
Most patients are advised to sleep on their back for the first few weeks, then gradually return to side sleeping once comfortable and after review.
When is it safe to go back to the gym?
Gentle cardio can usually restart at around two weeks. Upper-body training and high-impact exercise are generally reintroduced from about six weeks.
When will my breasts look settled?
The implants soften and settle over the first three to six months. The scar continues to mature for up to 18 months.
Is recovery after MiniAug painful?
Most patients describe tightness, pressure and soreness rather than severe pain, and simple regular painkillers are usually enough. Discomfort tends to ease noticeably over the first week.
