Recovery from a mini tummy tuck is usually quicker than from a full abdominoplasty. Most people walk slightly bent for a few days, return to desk-based work at around one to two weeks, drive at around two weeks and resume full exercise at about six weeks. Swelling of the lower abdomen settles over several months, and the scar continues to fade for 12 to 18 months.
The first 48 hours
You will wake with dressings over a low scar across the lower abdomen and a compression garment in place. Some patients have a drain, which is typically removed within a day or two. The lower tummy feels tight and sore, especially when getting up, and discomfort is controlled with prescribed pain relief. Nurses will help you out of bed within hours of surgery, because walking is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of blood clots. Many patients go home the same day or after one night, with a responsible adult to stay with them.
Week one
Walk little and often, standing a little bent at first if the scar feels tight, and gradually straighten over several days. Wear your garment day and night except when showering. Keep dressings clean and dry as instructed; showering is usually allowed after the first check. Constipation is common with painkillers and reduced activity, so drink plenty of fluid and eat fibre. Avoid lifting anything heavier than a kettle, and rest with pillows under your knees to take tension off the incision. A nurse check is usually arranged at around one week.
Weeks two to six
- Work: desk-based work is often possible from one to two weeks; manual work usually needs four to six weeks.
- Driving: typically around two weeks, once you can wear a seatbelt comfortably, twist and perform an emergency stop.
- Garment: most patients wear compression for around six weeks, as advised.
- Lifting and childcare: avoid heavy lifting, including lifting small children, for about six weeks, particularly if the muscles were tightened.
- Exercise: walking daily throughout; gentle cardio from about four weeks; core work, weights and high-impact exercise from around six weeks, building up gradually.
Three to twelve months
The lower abdomen may feel firm, swollen or numb for some months, and swelling often worsens at the end of a long day before improving again. Numbness above the scar usually improves gradually but may not recover completely. By around three months, most people feel comfortable in fitted clothing, and the final shape is usually seen at six to twelve months. Keeping a stable weight helps maintain the result.
Sleep and comfort
For the first two weeks, sleeping on your back with the upper body slightly raised and a pillow under the knees reduces pulling on the scar. Some people find a recliner chair comfortable. Side-sleeping can usually be introduced gradually after two to three weeks. Loose, high-waisted underwear or trousers that sit above the scar help avoid rubbing.
Scar care
The mini tummy tuck scar sits low, typically within the underwear or bikini line, and is shorter than a full abdominoplasty scar. Once the wound has healed, usually after two to three weeks, gentle massage and silicone gel or sheets can help the scar flatten and soften. Keep it out of the sun for at least a year. The scar is often red or pink for several months before fading to a paler line.
Warning signs and when to call
Contact the surgical team the same day for fever, spreading redness, increasing pain or discharge from the wound. A rapidly enlarging, tense swelling of the abdomen shortly after surgery should be reported urgently. A soft, fluid-filled swelling appearing a week or two later may be a seroma and should be checked. Sudden calf pain or one-sided leg swelling needs same-day review by your GP or NHS 111, and chest pain or breathlessness requires a 999 call. See the risks and safety guide for more.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is mini tummy tuck recovery easier than a full tummy tuck?
Generally yes. The incision is shorter, the belly button is usually untouched and the muscle repair is limited, so many people recover more quickly.
How long will the garment be worn?
Usually around six weeks, day and night at first. Mr Nassab will adjust this to your progress.
When can normal exercise restart?
Walking starts straight away, gentle cardio at about four weeks and full exercise, including core work, from around six weeks.
Will there be a drain?
Some patients have a drain for a day or two; many mini tummy tucks are performed without one. This will be discussed beforehand.
How soon is it safe to fly after surgery?
Short flights are generally avoided for at least two weeks and long-haul flights for longer, because of the risk of blood clots. Always check with the surgical team.
