Most people return to desk-based work within about a week of BodyTite, wearing a compression garment for around four to six weeks. Swelling and firmness settle gradually, and because the radiofrequency energy stimulates the tissues to contract over time, skin tightening continues to develop for six to twelve months. How quickly you recover depends on the number and size of the areas treated.
Day of treatment and the first 48 hours
BodyTite combines radiofrequency-assisted lipolysis with fat removal. It can be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or under general anaesthetic, depending on the areas treated, and most patients go home the same day. You will be fitted with a compression garment before leaving. Expect the tinted anaesthetic fluid to drain from the small incisions for 24 to 48 hours, so absorbent pads and dark towels are useful. The treated areas will feel sore, tight and swollen, similar to a deep bruise; regular simple painkillers usually help. Walk around every hour or two while awake to support circulation.
The first week
Bruising and swelling often peak around days two to four. Wear the garment day and night, removing it only to shower once you are told this is safe. Small incisions are usually healed or ready for stitch removal at around a week. Avoid baths, swimming and hot tubs until the wounds have closed. Most people are back at a desk job in five to seven days, though large-volume or multi-area treatments may need longer.
Weeks two to six
- Compression: continue wearing the garment for around four to six weeks in total, as advised, to support the tissues and control swelling.
- Exercise: gentle walking throughout; light exercise from around two weeks, and strenuous training, core work and heavy lifting from four to six weeks once cleared.
- Driving: when you can sit comfortably in a seatbelt, are off sedating painkillers and could perform an emergency stop, often after a few days to a week.
- Firmness and numbness: the treated tissues often feel firm, lumpy or numb; this is part of normal healing and usually softens progressively.
- Massage: lymphatic drainage massage may be recommended to help swelling resolve, once the incisions have healed.
Three to twelve months: the tightening phase
Radiofrequency heating aims to cause gradual contraction of the connective tissue under the skin. The visible benefit therefore unfolds slowly: early changes are masked by swelling, and the skin continues to retract and firm over six to twelve months. Areas such as the lower abdomen and thighs can hold swelling for longer. Patience is important, and your result is usually assessed at around six months and again at a year.
Caring for the small incision scars
The entry points are a few millimetres long and placed in discreet locations. Keep them clean and dry, and once healed, silicone gel and sun protection can help them fade. Scars typically mature over 12 to 18 months and usually become pale and flat.
Warning signs
Contact the surgical team the same day for fever, spreading redness, increasing pain, or discharge from an incision. Blistering, a darkening patch or a new area of unusual pain on the skin surface should also be reported promptly, as it may indicate a heat-related skin injury. A rapidly enlarging, tense swelling in one area needs urgent contact with the team. Sudden one-sided calf pain or leg swelling needs same-day assessment by your GP or NHS 111, and chest pain or breathlessness requires a 999 call.
Planning ahead
Arrange around a week away from work for smaller treatments, and up to two weeks for larger or combined areas. Have loose, dark clothing ready to wear over your garment, and a second garment so one can be washed. Keep your weight stable after treatment to maintain the result. For more on potential complications, see the BodyTite risks guide, and the BodyTite page for how the treatment works.
