Most people return to desk-based work around two weeks after an arm lift, resume light exercise after about four to six weeks and wait around six weeks before heavy lifting or upper-body training. Compression sleeves are usually worn for about six weeks. Swelling settles gradually over several months, and the scar along the inner arm continues to mature and fade for 12 to 18 months.
The first 48 hours
You will wake with dressings along the inner arms and compression sleeves in place. Some patients have small drains for a day or two to remove fluid. The arms will feel tight, swollen and sore, especially when lifting them or bending the elbows fully. Keep the arms raised on pillows when resting, which helps reduce swelling, and walk around the house regularly to help circulation. Pain relief is taken regularly at first. You will need help with dressing, washing hair and lifting anything heavier than a cup.
Week one
- Swelling and bruising: usually peak in the first few days and then begin to ease.
- Hands: the hands may swell slightly; gentle finger and wrist movements help.
- Movement: keep elbows moving gently but avoid raising the arms above shoulder height.
- Showering: follow the team’s advice about when dressings can get wet, often after a few days.
- Sleep: sleep on your back with arms supported on pillows rather than on your side.
Your first wound check is usually within the first week to ten days.
Weeks two to six
Most people feel much more comfortable by the second week and return to desk work at around two weeks, or later if the job involves lifting or repetitive arm use. Continue wearing compression sleeves day and night for around six weeks, unless advised otherwise. Driving is possible once you can grip the wheel, turn comfortably and perform an emergency stop without pain, often around two weeks. Light walking can increase steadily. Avoid lifting heavy shopping, children or weights, and avoid stretching the arms overhead, as this puts tension on the healing wound, especially near the armpit.
Months three to twelve
By six weeks, most people can gradually return to their usual exercise, starting with lighter weights and building up. Residual swelling, particularly near the elbow, can take three to six months to settle fully. The scar is often pink, raised or firm at first and then slowly softens and flattens. Numbness or tingling on the inner arm or forearm usually improves over months as sensory nerves recover. The final shape of the arm is typically visible by around six months, with the scar continuing to improve for up to 18 months.
Caring for your scar
- Silicone: once the wound has fully healed, silicone gel or sheets can help the scar mature.
- Massage: gentle scar massage may be recommended after a few weeks.
- Sun protection: protect the scar from sun for at least a year with clothing or high-factor sunscreen.
- Avoid tension: reaching and heavy lifting too soon can widen the scar, particularly in the armpit.
Mr Nassab will review the scar at follow-up and advise if additional treatment is needed.
Warning signs and what to do
- One arm rapidly swelling, becoming tense or very bruised: contact the surgical team urgently, as this may indicate bleeding.
- Fever, spreading redness, wound opening or discharge: contact the team the same day.
- A soft, fluid-filled swelling along the arm: let the team know, as a fluid collection (seroma) may need draining.
- Calf pain or one-sided leg swelling: see your GP or call NHS 111 the same day.
- Chest pain or breathlessness: call 999.
Helping your recovery
Stopping nicotine well before surgery, eating a balanced diet with enough protein, staying hydrated and keeping to your garment routine all support healing. Prepare your home so that everyday items are at waist height, and choose loose, front-opening tops that fit over compression sleeves. Our guide to arm lift risks explains complications in more detail. An arm lift costs from £11,500 and the £150 consultation is separate. Cosmetic surgery is for adults aged 18 and over.
