PINNAPLASTY (OTOPLASTY)

Prominent Ear Correction

Treatment Overview

Pinnaplasty, also known as Otoplasty, is the surgical procedure to improve prominent ears. This procedure is commonly referred as pinning back the ears. Prominent ears are a very common condition. This arises from when the anti helical fold is not developed in people or if they have a deep conchal bowl. There are some alternative methods of prominent ear correction such as the Earfold. The Earfold was a metal clip inserted into the ear to create the anti helical fold. This clip has now been discontinued and so pinnaplasty remains the main treatment for prominent ear correction. What are the different types of prominent ear correction?

There are a few different techniques available for correction of protruding ears. The procedure is often referred to as ear pinning. The traditional method of surgery is known as pinnaplasty or otoplasty.

  • Pinnaplasty: Pinnaplasty is the surgical procedure to pin back bat ears. This involves a cut behind the ear and then folding of the cartilage to pull back the protruding ears. Frequently, a head bandage is required following this procedure.
  • Earfold: The Earfold is a new method of prominent ear correction. This uses an implantable clip to fold back the cartilage. This is inserted through an incision on the front of the ear. The Earfold has now been discontinued.
